Greene County Bridge Replacement Over Interstate 44
Challenge
The bridge was aging, deteriorating and had a sub-standard vertical clearance over the interstate. Those issues, combined with increased traffic demand, led the Federal Highway Administration and Missouri Department of Transportation to seek its replacement.
Solution
A two-span, widened bridge with MSE walls at each abutment, set back 30 feet to eliminate the need for shoulder guardrails, was the solution to MDOT’s problem. The vertical clearance was achieved by raising the grade of Route B about two feet and introducing a vertical curve that tied to the road just beyond the ramp terminals. The old pavement was removed and Route B was widened on both sides with new base and pavement. In addition, a turn lane was added to accommodate the increased traffic. During demolition and installation of the bridge, traffic was routed over the ramps during a 24-hour shutdown of that section of interstate starting on Friday after rush hour and ending on Saturday evening.

Bartlett & West’s approach provided a safer and more reliable, wider bridge and connected road to allow better flow of increased traffic. It also minimized interstate closure so drivers in the busy corridor would be negligibly impacted.
