Challenge

The future development of the Missouri Valley Complex in Bismarck, North Dakota needed to be reimagined.

Situated on the eastern edge of the community, the 320-acre complex is owned by Burleigh County and needed a long-term vision to guide its use. Due to the numerous stakeholders involved with the complex, it was necessary for the design team to facilitate numerous input meetings, discussions and opportunities for the public to weigh in on the project during all aspects of design.

Solution

A master planning committee, comprised of representatives from the Bismarck Parks and Recreation Department and the Burleigh County Parks Board, provided input as information was collected, plan alternatives were developed and the final concept was solidified. The design team further facilitated public engagement through use of a project website, online questionnaires and four public input meetings which were available to the community.

Value

The final master plan concept includes indoor and outdoor rodeo arenas, off-leash dog park, mountain biking trails, community garden areas, farmer’s market pavilion, and new entrances into the site. These improvements will draw traffic from throughout the area and will present a long-term benefit to the community with prolonged use.
