Project Detail

43rd Avenue Park Master Plan

Total Cost
$9.06 million
State
Kansas

Challenge

The City of Hutchinson received a gift of more than 70 acres of park land to the north. The Parks Department wanted to plan for the long-term use of this property to address the void of valuable recreational space for residents in that part of their community.

Solution

The project kicked off with a two-day design charrette, which provided the design team with opportunities to meet directly with neighboring property owners as well as vested stakeholders to determine the immediate programming elements to incorporate into the plan. The design elements included in the final phase approach of the master plan document were walking trails, an adventure playground, a fishing pond, fitness stations, practice fields and an inclusive playground.

Value

The first of its kind in the central United States, the “Shane’s Inspiration” Playground is the cornerstone of the 43rd Avenue Park. This addition is a unique outlet for kids of all ages and abilities to have complete access to play equipment, providing a much-needed recreational feature for years to come.
