Tecumseh Quivera Drainage Improvements
Challenge
The City of Manhattan needed to make improvements to the storm drainage system to abate the frequent flooding affecting residents who lived within the Tecumseh/Quivera drainage basin.
Solution
Bartlett & West led a design team, which included SMH Consultants, to develop a plan to decrease the excessive runoff. First, the capacity of the existing drainage detention basin at the Chase Manhattan Apartments Complex was increased to handle runoff from the surrounding areas. Second, a detention basin south of Bramlage Coliseum was designed to handle runoff coming directly from Kansas State University. The final step was to create a new, two-tier detention basin connected by a bio-swale on the Riley County Health Department property at the intersection of Hartford and Claflin roads. The design for the two-celled basin included extensive landscaping due to the adjacent Health Department and surrounding residential areas. Bartlett & West and SMH worked directly with neighborhood property owners to ensure that the characteristics of the existing landscape were not changed.
Value
The Tecumseh/Quivera stormwater improvement project effectively and efficiently eliminated flooding along the residential streets while incorporating numerous water quality benefits. Construction included three detention ponds and almost 3,000 feet of new concrete pavement streets and RCB storm sewer.
